I am so excited to share this review with you!! Mainly because the author used to babysit my children!!
Cry of Hope ($9.99) is written by Emily Chapman, who will be a homeschool graduate this year. Emily loves Jesus. She has taken her love of the Bible and her love of history and merged them into a sweet novel. Emily started writing Cry of Hope when she was twelve and it is so fun to watch as her dream becomes a reality!
Cry of Hope is about a young girl named Hope whose parents decide to travel to the New World. The family leaves Holland, and the rest of the book takes the reader through their adventures as they brave the rough seas, land in a wilderness, and meet the natives.
Not only is this a physical adventure, what one of the heart as well, as Hope grows in her faith. Love, hunger, weariness, death, and life drip off the pages as the characters transform their lives.
One of my favorite sections of the book is when Hope grapples with her lack of faith and hope. It has been so cold, and she asks her brother if spring will ever come. I love his answer: “We have hope, little sister. It brightens the dark winter days and brings forth the vision of starting this new beautiful plantation. It gives faith its foothold; it put forth root when Christ rose from the grave. Spring will come.” (page 118)
Yes, this book is written by a high school student. But it is an enjoyable, well written novel that provides a foundation for future literary works.
This book would be a perfect Thanksgiving or Christmas gift for a young middle school or high school girl. But I have a feeling you moms might want to read it too! Not only would your young reader receive a good book, but you would help Emily pay her way to college!
Overall, I highly recommend buying this book. But be sure to have tissues nearby. It made me cry! Cry of Hope earns 5 FFS Aliens out of 5 FFS Aliens for Reading friendliness!
