What if? is a great question to ask. Many people avoid asking it because it can lead to pessimistic thinking because we cannot change the past. But it can also lead to critical thinking and even positive thinking.

What if gravity did not exist?

What if my choices place consequences onto my children?

What if Jesus had never come?

Christmas Book

What is If He Had Not Come:

If He Had Not Come is reintroduced by David Nicholson. Nicholson is a retired teacher and a short term missionary. He used to read this story to his own children. This story is actually authored by Nan F. Weeks, but very little is known about her and her work except that it was published in 1938.

This beautiful Christmas Book can be bought as a hardcover ($18.95) or an ebook ($3.99). This book is best for those ages 6 and up so dynamic conversation can take place.

The artwork is created by Charles Jaskiewicz who has illustrated a number of other children’s books.

How We Used The Product:

The kids (7, 5, and 3) and I snuggled on the couch as we read the book. The story begins with a little boy preparing for Christmas Eve and reading scripture with his father before bed. The boy then focuses on the truth in John 15:22. After the first few pages I started having the children predict what they thought might be happening, or happen, on the next page.

As the story progressed, my son began to predict the ending. But I could tell my daughter was some what bothered by what was happening in the story.

At the end, Sweet Cheeks blurted out, “If he had not come there would be no churches and people who loved Jesus! The world would be cracked up and everything on fire!”

Granted, she’s being a little dramatic…but if Jesus had not come, there would be no reason for churches, the world would be cracked up, and all people would be destined for an eternity apart from God.

I think she understood the message of the story.

If He Had Not ComeIn the back of the book, there is a list of interactive topics and questions to help lead conversation. There is also a simple Bible Study and gospel message written at the end. I greatly appreciate that! Many of the questions are open ended which allows for interesting answers and conversation. There is also a “Digging Deeper” section that includes scripture references and thought provoking insight.

Recommendation:

This would be a wonderful book to use as a Christmas tradition because as the children grow older, you can ask the harder questions from the back of the book. Discussion and scripture is a great way to enter into the Christmas season.
