Homeschool Review ~ Happy Kids Songs

We always are listening to CDs in the car, so when asked to review Happy Kids Songs, I took the MP3 files and put them onto a CD. We listened to them in the car and then the CD disappeared! One of the kids had taken it inside in order to listen to it. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever see it again!

Happy Kids Songs

What is Happy Kids Songs:

Happy Kids Songs attempt to teach character traits and social skills to children ages 3-8. Dr. Mac, a child psychologist and writer and director of music for the hit show Jay Jay the Jet Plane, has produced eight albums of snappy tunes which teach a variety of social skills including how to be friends, good manners, attitudes, and character. Of the eight albums, I received three:

Friends & Sharing (Set 1)
Happiness & Attitude (Set 7)
Manners & Character (Set 6)

Each album includes 5 catchy, songs for $4.95, or each song can be downloaded individually for $0.99. Each song is written for children ages 4-8. They deal with every day type scenarios that young children might face. The focus of this review was to be on the songs themselves, but I was also given the Happy Songs Workbook: Hands-on Activities to Build Character, Social & Emotional Skills ($12.56) which includes all of the FREE activities that can be downloaded off of the website once a parent signs up for the printouts. Each song has the lyrics written and then there are activities and coloring pages that help develop the skill communicated in the song.

You can see Dr. Mac on YouTube HERE. And with the links above, you can find samples of the songs.

How We Used The Product:

As I mentioned before, we started out listening to the CD in the car. When I finally found the CD, we stuck it in the stereo in the living room. I was impressed that the songs didn’t sound like an electric piano with 3-4 kids standing around a microphone. The songs seem to be high-quality and offer a variety of music styles. I found myself dancing a little to “Quirks” and singing about the “Good ship, Friendship.”HKS-Workbook3D_zps652c8700

After some of the songs, I would stop the music and the kids and I would discuss the situation, what the song described as a way to remedy the situation, and if they had ever been in a similar situation. This product is not Christian and it does not advertise itself as such, but many of the character issues and qualities that the songs address, such as The Golden Rule, reflect Christian morals.

The words used in the songs are well written. Some are meant to make a point through humor, others are of a more serious nature. “Quirks” was one of my favorite songs with words such as, “My baby brother always gurgles, My sister Cindy smiles and smirks, My sister kisses gerbils, but they’re all just little quirks.”

Then there were songs such as, “Honesty” which tackles a more serious issue. When I asked my son what he thought about the Happy Kids Songs he said, “I like the songs, but they don’t talk about Jesus.” I thought that was an insightful observation. Teaching good morals and how to treat other people stems from the Bible, and while it is good to teach these concepts, sanitizing the God out of the product leads to secular morality.

Recommendation:

As a Christian blogger and mother, I cannot recommend this product as a spiritual teaching tool. However, the songs are fun, cute, and do open up discussions that might otherwise be overlooked.

Overall, Happy Kids Songs earns 4 FFS Aliens out of 5 FFS Aliens for homeschool Musical friendliness!
