Homeschool Review ~ UberSmart Math Facts

Math facts. They are dull, but necessary. When in the classroom I tried multiple ways to make math facts more enjoyable. Round Robin Math Facts, Speed Math Facts, Graph Your Progress of Math Facts…..but all efforts just cloaked the reality that the kids were practicing math facts.

What is UberSmart Math Facts:

UberSmart Software is authored by David Kocur, a homeschool dad, who wrote the program to help his own children learn their math facts. Within a few months, his children had mastered their math facts!! UberSmart Math Facts ($24.95~home use) is a downloadable software that can be used by eight or more students. There is an option for a professional license so the software can be used in the classroom. There is a 30 day trial available and worksheets for extra practice. This is for Windows 7, 8, XP and Vista only.

This program can be used with children K-6, but any child ready to learn simple math facts, or needing remedial work with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division can use this product. There is a beginning level which includes the use of dot cards (think dominoes) and numbers can be on the cards or not. The facts are presented in order (0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, etc), so the child can work his way up to the 9’s before attempting to have all of the facts mixed. For the beginning level, the mouse is used to click on the correct answer. For the intermediate level, the numbers are typed in. If your child has trouble typing, then there is an option to help your child learn this. You can choose to have your child “learn” the facts or “practice” the facts once he knows the process of the math operation chosen. You can also assess the child or check for mastery in the skill. You can choose to use a timer, or not. There is also a report section with line graphs showing progress and mastery progress charts with smiley faces. If you need a grade, then there is a Grade Book area with the percentages from the assessments.

How We Used The Product:

I used this program as a supplement to our normal math curriculum. My 2nd grader should be getting to where he is mastering addition facts and my Kindergartener is just beginning her addition facts. I had both kids go through the assessment first to give an idea where they were lacking. I started RB on the 0’s in the practice section and Sweet Cheeks needed to do the learning section and the typing section. I had them work through two number sections 3-4 times a week. Once a number level was learned, then they went on to the next level. I chose to not use the timer because they both stress out when timed.

RB got all the way through to the 9’s and has started the Mastery section. He has quite a few green smiley faces. Sweet Cheeks in on the 6’s. I tried having her work on the Mastery section with the 0’s and 1’s, but she didn’t do as well as I thought she would. So I have her practicing some more.

The kids would tell you that they really dislike using this program. They do not find it inspiring enough. I did not find it intuitive to use. I had to sit and click through all kinds of things to figure out what was what. Unless I missed some instructions somewhere, there was no landing page in the program where I could learn about each section. I still do not know what the Compete section is and how to use it. Again, perhaps I missed some instructions somewhere.

Even though the children did not enjoy the program, I have seen good results. RB is quicker and does not complain as much about having to add or subtract in his regular math work. Sweet Cheeks has gained confidence and continues to learn how to add.

Even though this product was not a good fit for my family, it might be for yours. It does give excellent practice with math facts and there are so many options to choose from.
