I rarely watch the news. It’s depressing. Another killing. Another political fall. Another child abused.
As Christians, we need to remind ourselves everyday that we are strangers here on this earth. This is not our home. We are only here for as long as God wants us here. And I think a lot of people forget that. We forget what our purpose is. We forget our value. The mundane takes over the specialness of who we are.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” ~ Genesis 1:1, 27
The Hebrew word for “God” in these verses is Elohiym, which means the Universal Creator. The word for “created” is bara, which designates an act that only God can accomplish. So creation was only something that a Universal Creator could do. It “didn’t just happen.”
This Universal Creator also created, bara, people, which includes you and me. But what is really neat, and the point I want you to see is that Elohiym created people “in his own image.” That word used for “image” is tselem, which means not a duplicate, to shade or shadow. Therefore God did not create us to be little gods like Him, but we were created to be in the shadow of God.
The kids and I play a game we like to call “Can You Step on My Shadow?” I’ll be walking along and RB or Sweet Cheeks begins to proclaim, “I’m stepping on your shadow, Mama!” Then they burst into giggles as I try to slow down or speed up trying to get them off of my shadow.
That’s what we are with God. We have been created to step in His shadow and be a part of what He is doing. To go where He goes. To be involved in His purpose which is greater than we can imagine. As He moves forward, we should move forward. When He is still, then we should be still.
And there is one other thing. He states this fact three times in one verse: created man, created him, created them. When God says something three times, He really means it.
Take heart, reader. You have purpose. You have value. What you are doing is important because you were created by Elohiym to be in His shadow.
And He takes that seriously.
Maybe we should as well.
