Have you ever heard of a Jesse Tree? If not, then please allow me to tell you about the Jesse Tree and about this wonderful book created by Jen Frost of Faith and Fabric Design. Are you wanting to begin a new family tradition or do something different in your children’s ministry this Christmas season? Try a Jesse Tree!

Jesse TreeJesse Trees have been around for a long time, but it hasn’t been until recently that I have seen these used in homes on a yearly basis. The Jesse Tree is named after King David’s father, Jesse, and based upon the prophesy of Jesus found in Isaiah 11:1-4.

I can see these trees used in Sunday School classes, and in the home. During the weeks of Advent, there is a branch, or “tree” of some sort, and then ornaments are hung that represent scriptures that prophesy about Jesus. Sunday School classes and children’s ministries should be telling the story of Jesus during the weeks leading up to Christmas, and this is a simple way to show how the Old Testament tells about Jesus. This is also a great new family tradition to implement.

I’ve always wanted to incorporate the Jesse Tree into our Christmas Advent traditions, but it’s been so hard to add “one more thing” to the holiday.

But Jen’s book, Our Family’s Jesse Tree, makes it easy and involves the kids (if you so choose).Jesse Tree 3I am not the craftiest person in the world, although I try. I wonder if Jen had me in mind when she put this book together. Our Family’s Jesse Tree gives step-by-step directions for how to make the tree AND the ornaments. (Which I need!)

Depending upon your crafty skills, you can either make the ornaments with paper, or with felt and simple sewing, or other creative methods. Me? I’ll be printing the colored ornaments onto card stock and then lamenating them. Although I think I will attempt to make the tree. We’ll see how that goes, so be sure to check back with me!Jesse Tree 4Along with the ornament directions, the book includes short advent devotions for each day of Advent.

You can choose to do different things, whatever fits your family. You can create all of the ornaments before Advent and then read the devotions and scriptures through the holiday adding your ornaments to your tree. OR you can do each ornament the “day of” and have a child color the picture before you put it on the tree. OR you can have your kids create all of the ornaments before the advent season and then lead the family devotions themselves.

Jesse Tree 2Isn’t it beautiful?

You choose.
