Encouragement for Today

He was terrified! Huge armies were coming toward him and he had no idea how to defend his people.

In desperation, he declared a fast for all of his kingdom. His nation gathered to seek the Lord.

The King stood before his people and prayed earnestly to the One True God. He reminded God of the nation’s history and the evilness of the enemy. He claimed powerlessness and weakness.

Every man, infant, woman, and child humbled himself before the Lord.

And then the Spirit of the Lord came down…in the midst of the congregation.

What an amazing picture!! Can you hear the sobs of the people crying out in desperation to the Maker? Can you hear the king? He is pleading, not for himself, but for his people and nation. Can you see the dust swirling around the walls of a powerless nation as evil empires swarm and gather their chariots for a fight?

This event really took place. The king’s name was Jehoshaphat and the recorded history of the nation of Judah is in the book of 2 Chronicles.

Then the Spirit of the Lord came down and spoke through Jahaziel, a Levite and the grandson of Benaiah {my new superhero!}.

This is what the Lord says:
1) Do not be afraid.
2) The battle is not yours.
3) Position yourselves.
4) Stand still.
5) See the salvation of the Lord.
6) Go out and face them.

Then ALL of the people bowed and worshiped the Lord.

Can you hear it? The relief? The thankfulness? The gratitude? Everyone of all ages, prostrate on the ground, knowing where their strength would come from! And then {picture this!!} the Levites stood and shouted praises to the Lord!

The next morning the army prepared itself for battle. The king consulted with his people and it was decided that a group would sing for the Lord and another would praise the Lord for His holiness.

Guess who led the group?

The singers and the praisers!! The military followed behind!!

And the scripture says this:

THE MOMENT they began their shouts and praises, the LORD set an ambush against the Ammonites, Moabites, and the inhabitants of Mount Seir, and they WERE DEFEATED. The Ammonites and the Moabites turned against the inhabitants of Mount Seir and completely annihilated them. When they had finished with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped destroy each other. ~ 2 Chronicles 20:22-23 (Caps added by me for excitement!)

Oh my friends! How many times have we rushed into the fight and been annihilated ourselves, when what we should have done is stand and sing praises? There are so many fights that we could avoid if we would but be still and listen to the Lord.

Do you need to sing praises today? Be thankful. Be grateful.

Be still.

Let God fight for you.

He can handle it.

What praise song do you feel like singing right now? Leave the title in the comment section below.

  1. Love that we posted the same message today! I am personally being attacked by a family member, and need this reminder so much right now! My human nature says, “Fight, Fight, Fight” but as you noted, God says, “Just be still, sing praises, and let me do your battling!”

Thank you for a great post!

    • Sweet friend, I am so sorry that is happening! I love that God’s grace is greater than any situation. He is bigger and stronger. So many times He wishes to go in and battle, but we’ve stepped between Him and a miracle.
